Is it legal to sell a car with no WOF?
Yes. What you can’t do is drive it on the road. Because we tow the car away, the expired WOF or rego is not a problem for the sale. We will still ask about the WOF: if it failed, the reasons help us price the car fairly.
Unpaid rego
If the licence lapsed a while ago, you may see warnings about unpaid fees when you do the change of ownership. Check the car’s status on the Waka Kotahi (NZTA) website before selling, and tell us what you find. Rules and fees change, so Waka Kotahi is the place to confirm your situation.
